Online newspaper audience at all time high
More Internet users are turning to newspaper web sites for their local
news than ever before. Over 47.3 million people visited online newspapers
in the month of September alone, up 15.8 percent from September of
last year.* Online news has evolved as a supplemental source that
is used along with traditional news media outlets.
Three-in-ten Americans ranging from 30-49 cite the internet as a
main source of news. Nearly 25 percent of adults age 18-29 get their
news daily on the Internet. The same is true for those in their 50’s.***.
The online audience is primarily young adults who are educated, wealthy
and have strong political interests. Readership is nearly equal between
men and women at approximately 75 percent each during a typical week.
Eighty percent of the readers have a college degree and one-in-five
households have incomes over $100,000.**
There are approximately five thousand known newspaper web sites in
the world and of those, 1,500 are in North America.* Newspapers have
earned a level of trust in their communities that can not be touched
by any other media medium. Newspaper web sites provide another convenient
way for readers to get information without leaving their home or
office.
“Not only is the overall audience growing for newspaper web
sites, but NAA studies have shown that they are often the leading local news
sites in their markets. It’s clear that newspapers’ longstanding
position of trust as part of the communities they serve has only strengthened,
not weakened, in the Internet era,” said NAA President and EO John F.
Sturm.*
